⛰️ The Small Cave and the Large Cave

On the slope of Bisericii hill, at an altitude of approximately 950 m, there are two impressive caves: Peștera Mică and Peștera Mare, also known as Peștera Liliecilor. These are located just 11 meters apart, in a remarkable limestone massif.

  • Little Cave has a length of 8.7 m and a width of 5.7 m at the entrance. Here, important archaeological remains have been discovered, attesting to human habitation from the Mousterian era.
  • Big Cave (Bats' Cave) has a main gallery of 162 m and is renowned for its numerous bat colonies, from which it gets its name. It is a warm cave, with moderate humidity and a multitude of spectacular limestone formations.

🦇 The Bats' Cave

The Bats' Cave, with an area of 4.80 ha, has the status of a national natural monument and is part of the special protection area of the "Piatra Craiului" Park. In its galleries there are rare species of bats, which should be studied only by specialists who know how such an objective should be treated.

The Bats' Cave is located on the Bran platform, at an altitude of 950 m. A small stream full of silt flows through the Bats' Cave.

Although special equipment is not necessary, a flashlight being sufficient, it is good to have protective equipment, to avoid getting dirty with clay and traces of guano, bat droppings, justified by the existence in the Bats' Cave in the village of Peștera of numerous bats living alone or grouped in colonies.
